Logistic Innovation: Crane Barge Mercurius Amsterdam

State-of-the-art container ships with their own crane onboard can load and unload wherever a quay is available. This ship, launched by the Mercurius Shipping Group in 2006, is the ultimate solution for the complex logistics of supply and removal of raw materials, semi-finished and finished products, in large industrial concentrations in and around ports, where the roads are jammed.
Since 2006, with the crane ship ‘Mercurius-Amsterdam', Mercurius offers innovative logistical services by water, by collecting and distributing containers in a region with its own crane.
The increase in the supply and removal of containers means increasing road congestions, with the predictable negative results, such as inconvenience, unreliable delivery times, stagnation of production processes and an increase in CO2 emissions. The Mercurius Shipping Group shows that inland shipping has advantages also for short distances, in and around seaports. In 2009 a second crane ship will be launched, somewhat larger than the Mercurius-Amsterdam.
